Of course, there are other reasons why Clarke should resign, which are too obvious to go over again now, but it can't be long now...

I don't see any particular reason why he should be permitted to resign. Sacking, asset-stripping, public humiliation, imprisonment and banning of memoirs - now, that would be different.
Whatever happened to being sacked for incompetence?
My suspicion is that sacking and resignation will not be seen in the near future, but a cabinet reshuffle after the forthcoming local elections thrashing is a near certainty.
